My Landlady Lip-sync’s Her Favorite Song

This is my 89-year-old landlady, Carol Lyn Black lip-syncing her favorite song “Happy Days Are Here Again”.

I did this piece as part of “Muse”, an online class offered on the educational website Skillshare taught by Katrina Tan-Conte.

I used this class as an excuse to experiment with a motion portrait. It was a blast, the class was great and Carol is a delight. Let’s get her on a TV show folks!

HERE WE GO!

Tonight we’re finally in theaters.  Just wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who liked, reblogged, tweeted or followed us for their curiosity, kindness, and support over the past few years.  From myself and the whole family that put this thing together, we love you guys.  Hope you enjoy the movie.

At the end of a film made by Rian, I always feel over-the-moon inspired. Seeing Looper last night magnified that feeling ten-fold.

(Don’t worry, there are no spoilers here. Just praise!)

I remember being seventeen, just seeing Brick for the first time. I was so amazed, and kept wondering WHO is this guy and what else has he made? Needless to say I stumbled upon Rian’s forum and back then he had only just made his first film. But that was okay, because I remember anticipating the next film of his (Bloom), and then the next one (Looper), too. I think that’s what made it all the more special. Brick, as a piece of film and writing, means a lot to me. It led me to so many amazing things: the discovery of Rian and watching his film career blossom. It led me to HitRECord when it was just a teensy little forum. I got to witness that blossom as a community, too. And, quite honestly, it led me to follow my heart and my dreams to study film-making and pursue scriptwriting. I don’t know Rian personally, but I have had the pleasure of speaking to him at last years Fall Formal, and his genuine encouragement when I told him I was an aspiring screenwriter was something very special, and I can’t thank him enough for that.

It’s a really moving thing to watch someone I admire as much as I do Rian create films that are meaningful and what I think, will shape our film generation. The collective of talent from the people who worked on this film was completely impressive (the actors, the crew, the artists, the musicians) Also to mention, a good portion of the work that went into this film was contributed by several (Zachary) other (Marke) members (Nathan) of the Johnson family just goes to show how special this whole process really was.

The performances were absolutely stunning. I remain absolutely blown away by the single fact that everyone had that chameleon factor. The actors persona’s were nonexistent. It was the characters that were alive. The score became a part of the film so well that I knew it was there and felt it rather than just heard it, and that was magnificent. I love when a film is able to immerse you so deeply in that world and universe rather than just telling and showing. A world that effortlessly feels real and not too far-fetched, with so many layers and complexities, and I found myself so emotionally taken off guard by the end of it. That quality in storytelling these days is so rare and so special.

Anyways. My short for a very long-winded ‘what I’m trying to say is’ this:

Thank you, Rian & the Looper family for such a beautiful piece of cinema.

Go see Looper. And, if you haven’t already, see The Brothers Bloom and Brick. I hope they all inspire you as they have me over the years.
