THE EAST, (2013)
a film by ZAL BATMANGLIJ & BRIT MARLING.
Sound of my Voice, 2012.
Finally! I got to see Sound of my Voice on Saturday. The film itself was even more mind-bending than I expected. (in the best way possible) Needless to say, I loved the film! I won’t say much else, but Brit and Zal have created the most beautifully haunting world. One that endlessly keeps you on your toes, constantly testing where you, the audience, are putting your faith within the characters, and in the story. Do you believe in Maggie, or is she just a con? I’m still choosing where I stand, and I’m still reeling over it. It’s a complete game-changer. That, ladies and gentleman, is how you tell a damn good story.
Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij did a wonderful Q&A afterwards. I have been inspired by them prior to meeting them, but afterward I found myself more appreciative and humbled by their enthusiasm for cinema, for their love of storytelling. These two are a real breath of fresh air, and I can’t wait to see what else they bring to the world of Independent cinema!
